Reports in England suggest that Worcester Warriors are on the verge of agreeing to terms of a sale, which would secure the financially troubled Premiership club’s short- and long-term future.
Reports by the Telegraph, BBC and Times UK state players and staff at Worcester were informed by email on Monday evening that a buyer had been found for the club and that finer details were being ironed out, with a deal expected to be announced in the next 24 hours.
There had been major concerns that the Warriors could fold due to an unpaid £6-million tax bill to HMRC.
Worcester began the Premiership season with a 45-14 away loss to London Irish, where the players were wearing last season’s strip, as the new kit has been ordered but not yet paid for.
Worcester’s debts are reported to total £25m, but the new unnamed ownership, which would be subject to RFU approval, would help pay the outstanding funds, as well as salaries to staff and players.
Should the Warriors have folded, the club’s South African stars would have been left in a tricky situation.
Duhan van der Merwe was linked with a move to Racing 92, but the French club has instead signed former Wasps wing and NFL tryout Christian Wade on a short-term deal as a medical joker until the end of the year.
Francois Venter, meanwhile, was among those Worcester players who posted a video appeal on social media, explaining how he and his wife had laid down their roots in Worcestershire.
