Who’s the best hooker?

Two of our team members pick their No 2 for the SARugbymag.co.za Fans' World XV.

Jeremy Proome
ADRIAAN STRAUSS

Without question, Strauss deserves to be in any international team, and while he may not have the bulk and bruising nature of Bismarck du Plessis, I’d take his versatility and skill in my World XV.

In 2013, Strauss showed he has the leadership skills to not only control the set pieces, but also to take a team like the Cheetahs, who don't have as many Boks as other South African franchises, to the Super Rugby play-offs for the first time.

He also has the odd game-breaking moment, such as his excellently-timed interception ability – something unique to a hooker.

His game time with the Springboks showed that he can handle any world-class opposition and his ability to link up with the backline is unrivalled in South African rugby.

BISMARCK DU PLESSIS

This isn't even a contest. Strauss is a fine and highly competent player, but Du Plessis is a freak.

There isn't a key discipline for his position in which he doesn't excel – his lineout feeds consistently find their intended targets, he dominates scrums through excellent technique and superior strength, while his work rate, accuracy and power on defence is awe-inspiring and fear-inducing. Then he gives you more in the form of a quick and devastating ball-carrying option and a gifted breakdown operator.

Strauss can't match him in any facet of play, but neither can any hooker in the game. His mere presence serves to galvanise his team-mates and concern their opposition. Furthermore, he has a heart as big as the world.

He is so far ahead of the pack that this debate is pointless.
