Australia opened their European tour with a dramatic win over Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday as the Wallabies ended a run of three successive defeats by all opponents.
Flyhalf Blair Kinghorn, who had a fine match with ball in hand, could have won the game for Scotland with a minute from time only to push his 40-metre kick wide of the left post as Australia beat the Scots 16-15 – the first time in four Tests for the men from Down Under.
Scotland led 15-6, thanks to tries by Ollie Smith and Kinghorn, but the match turned in the final quarter after Scotland replacement Glen Young was sin-binned for a dangerous challenge on Wallabies scrumhalf Tate McDermott.
With Scotland a man down, Australia captain James Slipper forced his way over for a close-range, converted try before flyhalf Bernard Foley’s penalty – his fourth successful goal-kick of the match – nudged the Wallabies a point ahead with 10 minutes remaining.
