There were wins for UCT, NWU, Wits, Tuks and Shimlas in round two of the 2022 Varsity Cup on Monday.
In Cape Town, the UCT Ikeys erased a 19-point half-time deficit to claim a stunning 26-24 comeback win over UJ. It is the second successive week the Ikeys secured a comeback victory after trailing at the break.
The NWU Eagles scored five tries to claim a convincing 40-19 bonus-point victory over a plucky UWC outfit in Potchefstroom.
In Johannesburg, wing Azi Afrika’s 75th-minute converted try and a late penalty from flyhalf Chris Humphries gave Wits a thrilling 20-18 win over the CUT Ixias.
CUT were reduced to 14 men for 20 minutes when flank Jan Kotze received a fourth-minute red card, but were still able to lead 13-10 at the break. They extended that to eight points when lock Kevin Strydom scored early in the second half but Wits would finish the match with a flourish.
Elsewhere, flank Dian Schoonees crossed the line twice as Tuks recorded a 22-6 win over the Madibaz. Tuks led 10-0 at half time, with flyhalf Chadwyn November scoring Madibaz’s only points early in the second half.
And, in the upset of round two, Shimlas ran in seven tries to stun Maties 50-28.
