The Waratahs are in negotiations with veteran back Adam Ashley-Cooper about a possible return to Super Rugby next year.

The 34-year-old, who has been plying his trade in Japan, has been linked with a return to Australia as he seeks to win a place in the Wallabies’ 2019 World Cup squad.

Waratahs CEO Andrew Hore confirmed that talks were being held with Ashley-Cooper.

‘Adam Ashley-Cooper has expressed an interest. We think in a year such as a World Cup year, where depth is going to be important, that we can see merit in Adam coming back.

‘Everybody speaks very, very highly of his character and leadership is a valuable asset. So anyone that shows really good leadership skills is valuable. Those discussions are live so we will see where that goes.’

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has already been impressed with Ashley-Cooper’s willingness to fight for a place in the squad.
