Steyn wants to make No 10 jersey his own

After returning to Loftus Versveld, Morne Steyn is fully intent on working hard to earn a starting berth with the Vodacom Bulls.

The veteran flyhalf, who was a key member of the dominant Bulls side over a decade ago, has no intention of being a backup to talented youngster Manie Libbok.

Speaking to Netwerk24, Steyn confirmed that while he is relishing his time back in Pretoria and hoping to help the Bulls inside backs in a mentoring capacity, he will certainly be vying for the starting role with Libbok.

‘I want to enjoy it and make a difference. I would love to help players like Manie [Libbok], Ivan [van Zyl] and Embrose [Papier] develop,’ said the 35-year-old, who left Paris club Stade Français towards the end of last year.

‘No one joins a new team with the intention of being a replacement. Manie has a lot of talent and it’s good to have someone to keep you on your toes. I, like Manie, intend to work hard and make the No 10 jersey mine.’

The 66 Test-capped Springbok, who previously enjoyed a successful spell with the Bulls, arrived at the club to offset the loss of Handre Pollard to Top 14 outfit Montpellier.

Steyn revealed that he had the option to remain in France or join another overseas-based club, but instead he requested that his agent find out if his former side would consider re-signing him.

‘Things worked out so well and it’s actually perfect to end my career here where it all began for me,’ added Steyn.

‘Of course it will be an adjustment to play Super Rugby again, but I’ve got more experience and my game has changed since playing in the northern hemisphere.’

The Bulls open their Vodacom Super Rugby campaign at the end of the month against the Sharks in Durban, but will run out against the Lions in a pre-season friendly on 19 January on Super Hero Sunday.
