Frans Steyn contributed 13 points with the boot as Jake White's Montpellier beat Bordeaux-Bègles in the French Top 14 on Friday night.
Montpellier are now second on the log, level on points with table-toppers Clermont, who have a game in hand.
The hosts' three tries were scored by winger Nemani Nadolo and centres Vincent Martin, with Steyn kicking two conversions and three penalties.
It was 10-10 at the break, but Steyn's boot and Tomane's try sealed the win for Montpellier.
No 8 Pierre Spies and locks Paul Willemse and Nico Janse van Rensburg were the other South Africans who started for Montpellier, with prop Jannie du Plessis on the bench.
