Specman gives positive update after suffering concussion

Rosko Specman says he is “okay” but will be taking things slow after suffering a concussion during the Cheetahs’ Currie Cup match against Western Province on Wednesday.

After coming off the bench for the Cheetahs in the second half of the match in Bloemfontein, Specman attempted to tackle WP wing Angelo Davids, but got his head on the wrong side of the tackle and was shoved down to the ground.

Despite the fact that Specman looked wobbly when he tried to get back on to his feet, referee Morne Ferreira allowed play to continue, which eventually ended with Davids sidestepping Specman and scoring a try.

The Springbok wing was only substituted after the try was scored and spent the rest of the match on the sidelines as the Cheetahs went on to claim a 38-21 win to stay top of the table.

Specman took to social media on Thursday to post a positive update on his status.

“12 years of rugby and suffered my 1st concussion last night,” Specman wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to everyone for their messages. The boy is okay. I’ll be taking it slow for a bit.”

Specman’s concussion comes in the same week that Western Province and Stormers lock David Meihuizen announced his retirement from rugby at the age of 24 due to concussive symptoms.

The Cheetahs are next in action against the Sharks in Durban on Wednesday, 23 March.
