Coach Franco Smith has confirmed that he will remain with the Cheetahs for the forseeable future.
Smith told Netwerk24 that Connacht had expressed an interest in acquiring his services. The Irish club is looking to replace Pat Lam who will coach Bristol next season.
'It’s true that I was contacted by Connacht in December, but I told them that I am committed to the Cheetahs,' Smith said.
Smith guided Free State to the Currie Cup title in 2016, a success that marked the union's first domestic trophy since 2007. He joined the Springboks as an assistant coach on the subsequent tour to Europe. Smith is expected to retain his position in the Bok set-up when SA Rugby makes an annoucement regarding the national coaching team later this week.
Meanwhile, Smith's Cheetahs will face the Sharks in a pre-season match in Umlazi on Friday.
