Scotland second-half blitz flattens Fiji

Tommy Seymour goes over for Scotland's third try Tommy Seymour
Published on November 10, 2018 | Leave a response

Tommy Seymour scored a hat-trick as Scotland thrashed Fiji 54-17 at Murrayfield on Saturday.

Fiji put up a brave fight in the first half – as the half-time score of 21-17 to the hosts suggests – but Scotland were simply too good in the second period, scoring a further five tries.

Even more pleasing for Scotland coach Gregor Townsend was that star fullback Stuart Hogg made an excellent comeback in his first Test since recovering from ankle surgery.

It was a shaky first period that did leave Townsend looking less than happy, however, as Fiji stayed in the game thanks to an opening penalty from flyhalf Ben Volavola and tries from Bill Mata and Semi Radradra.

Eastern Cape-born prop Allan Dell touched down for the hosts’ first try, with Fraser Brown and Seymour adding tries to see them go into the break ahead.

However, Scotland turned on the style in the second half and – aided by two yellow cards to Fiji – started to wear the visitors down.

They fully capitalised on their numbers advantage as Sean Maitland scored within three minutes of the half, before a Seymour double and tries from Adam Hastings and Jamie Ritchie sealed a classy win.

Scotland – Tries: Tommy Seymour (3), Allan Dell, Fraser Brown, Sean Maitland, Jamie Ritchie, Adam Hastings. Conversions: Grieg Laidlaw (5), Finn Russell (2).
Fiji – Tries: Bill Mata,  Semi Radradra. Conversions: Ben Volavola (2). Penalty: Volavola.
