Springbok centre Damian de Allende played a starring role as Munster hammered Leinster in the opening round of the Rainbow Cup this past weekend.
De Allende was in top form as he cut the Leinster defence to shreds on his way to inspiring Munster to a stunning 27-3 victory. It was the kind of performance that enhanced calls of him being the best inside centre in world rugby and definitely serves as a timely boost for the Boks in the lead-up to the British & Irish Lions series, especially considering South Africa have not played a Test since the 2019 World Cup final.
The 29-year-old was on the field from start to finish and, throughout that 80-minute shift, made a game-high 57 running metres, beat seven defenders, completed 13 passes and two offloads, made one barnstorming clean break and followed it up with a top-notch try assist.
But it wasn’t just his skills on attack that were on show. De Allende was equally excellent in defence, with 14 tackles and two crucial turnovers.
He played alongside compatriots Jean Kleyn, CJ Stander and Keynan Knox for the winning side. All three played well, but Stander in particular produced a statement performance, reminding the Lions selectors just how important a role he can still play for any team despite his imminent retirement.
