Evan Roos is focused on becoming the best version of himself for the Stormers, and not on earning a call-up for the Springboks, reports DEVIN HERMANUS.
Roos has been a revelation for the Stormers and Western Province since he joined from the Sharks in 2020, despite having missed a number of matches through injury. The industrious 22-year-old was even tipped as a possible Bok bolter in 2021, on the back of several barnstorming performances in the Currie Cup.
Watch: Roos continues to shine for WP
Speaking ahead of the Stormers’ Vodacom United Rugby Championship clash with the Cardiff Blues on Sunday at Cape Town Stadium, Roos said: “Being out with injury, you kind of realise how important rugby is in your life.
“But when it comes to the Boks, I don’t think or look too far ahead, I’m just taking things as they come.”
MVP Poll: Rockets leave Roos in their dust
Roos, who can cover all three back-row positions as well as lock, showed no signs of any niggles in Sunday’s 55-7 demolition of Zebre in Stellenbosch, and the former SA Schools star believes he has plenty of room for improvement in his game.
“I’m focusing on my set pieces, and I’d like to be more of an option at the lineouts,” Roos said. “I’m also working on becoming a master poacher like Deon Fourie!”
Forwards coach Rito Hlungwani added: “We’re very happy to have Evan back, and looking forward to him playing more games. We want Evan to improve every week and put himself in the best position to become a Springbok … and that opportunity will eventually come.”
