Evan Roos has completed a full house of awards by being named as the Vodacom United Rugby Championship’s Player of the Season.
The award is voted for by the media and public, as well as nominations from the coaching teams of the Springboks and the four participating franchises, with the Stormers No 8 coming out on top.
Roos adds this latest accolade, which forms part of the annual SA Rugby awards, to a personal haul that already includes the prizes for Vodacom Players’ Player of the Season, Vodacom Fans’ Player of the Season, Next-Gen Player of the Season and a place in the Dream Team.
The 22-year-old, who was part of the Stormers team that won the URC final in Cape Town, beat off the challenges from Vodacom Bulls captain Marcell Coetzee and his teammate Ruan Nortje, Lukhanyo Am (Sharks), Vincent Tshituka (Lions) and Warrick Gelant, another member of the Stormers’ championship-winning side.
“We are delighted for Evan and this award is well deserved given his form and consistency throughout the competition,” said Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber.
“The fact that he received this honour in a competition featuring some of the best players in the northern hemisphere also shows the depth and quality of players we have in South Africa and especially young players.”
