Scott Robertson will replace Todd Blackadder as head coach of the Crusaders from 2017 through to 2019.

Blackadder announced at the beginning of the year that the 2016 season would be his last in charge of the seven-time champions, leaving enough time for the franchise to start the process of appointing his successor. 

The 41-year-old Robertson, who earned 86 Super Rugby caps for the Crusaders and represented the All Blacks between 1998 and 2002, is the head coach of Canterbury in National Provincial Championship. He has led Canterbury to two titles since taking the job in 2013, and was also assistant coach between 2008 and 2012 when Canterbury won five successive titles.

Robertson was the head coach of the New Zealand U20s when they won the World Rugby U20 Championship last year and is coaching the team again this year.

'When I think about the remarkable men who have done the job before me, including Todd Blackadder, I am humbled and honoured to be stepping into their shoes. The previous and current coaching teams have built an impressive legacy and I take the responsibility of continuing and building on that legacy very seriously,' said Robertson.

'The playing group is a great bunch of men who I am excited to work with. I will give everything to this role and am ready to take on the opportunity.'
