The Blitzboks claimed a hard-fought 10-7 win over Australia in the final to successfully defend their title at the second Dubai Sevens tournament.
This was by no means the Blitzboks’ best performance, but the Cup final highlighted their unyielding resilience and determination.
South Africa started at full throttle as captain Siviwe Soyizwapi scored within 45 seconds after kick-off in the wake of a brilliant turnover at the breakdown.
It went downhill from there as Australia hogged the ball, but the Blitzboks were up to the task and conceded only one try to go into the break trailing 7-5.
While Australia continued to set the tone early in the second half, their efforts were curbed by desperate defence from the Blitzboks.
With time running out and the defending champs in need of a big play, JC Pretorius once again stepped up and delivered.
He burrowed through the Australian defence in the dying stages to score the title-winning try and secure a second Dubai Sevens Cup win in as many weeks.
With the result, South Africa also extended their current streak to 24 consecutive victories.
