The Reds’ set-piece dominance laid the foundation for their victory over the Sunwolves in Brisbane on Saturday, according to SARugbymag.co.za's Opta-powered stats.

The Reds boast a high scrum and lineout success rate this season and they used it to good effect again in a testing contest against the Sunwolves.

Jumpers Cadeyrn Neville and Rob Simmons secured 15 lineout throw-ins by hooker Andrew Ready for a 100% success rate, and two tries, by Curtis Browning and James Slipper, came from the set piece. The Reds also continually contested the Sunwolves lineout feeds and came away with one steal.

The Reds did concede one scrum penalty in the second half, but apart from that, their front rowers were far more superior, hooking the ball back on nine occasions.

The attacking stats were pretty equal in terms of metres gained, clean breaks made, defenders beaten and carries. Ill-discipline, however, stifled the Sunwolves. They conceded 11 penalties and 16 turnovers.
