Chris Smith Ratings: Smith, Louw run the show as Bulls defend title
Published on September 11, 2021

Replacing Johan Goosen in the starting lineup, Chris Smith was a standout performer for the Bulls as they claimed a comfortable win over the Sharks to defend their Currie Cup title on Saturday. DYLAN JACK picks and rates some of the top performers.

Chris Smith 9

Put into the starting lineup in difficult circumstances after Goosen was ruled out of the final due to a positive Covid-19 test. This performance firmly relegated the Rainbow Cup final to the past. Smith did the basics really well, including a 14-point haul from kicks at goal – missing just two of his attempts – and a neat pass to put Harold Voster into a gap for the Bulls’ first try.

Elrigh Louw 9

Arguably the Bulls most impressive performer as their pack was dominant throughout the 80 minutes. Louw made some really strong carries forward, as well as a couple of turnovers in another display of his immense potential.

Marcell Coetzee 9

A proper captain’s innings from the Bulls skipper. Together with Louw and Arno Botha, Coetzee totally outshone the Sharks back row. Deserved his try, which came from a simple quick tap, but needed a strong leg drive to get him over the tryline.

Harold Voster 8

A silky showing from the inside centre. Voster scored the first try with a sumptuous midfield break and set up the second for midfield partner Lionel Mapoe just a few minutes later. Took advantage of the Sharks’ shaky midfield combination, which had a late change just before kick-off.

Zak Burger 8

Lightning quick and yet almost unfailingly accurate in everything he did. His fast thinking, quick taps and quick service were key to the Bulls’ third try scored by captain Marcell Coetzee. Went over for a try himself in the second half.

Ruan Nortje 8

Imperious at the lineout, as he was in the 2020 Currie Cup final. The 23-year-old once again showed maturity beyond his years as he commanded the lineout. Nortje made some effective carries forward and a number of big hits to boot.

David Kriel 8

Looked incredibly comfortable at the back for the Bulls. Came alive on attack in the second half and made a couple of superb offloads. Also some good work defensively, both on the cover and one on one. Kriel did very well to prevent Anthony Volmink from scoring a breakaway try for the Sharks in the final 10 minutes of the match.
