With Wasps and Worcester set to be relegated from the English Premiership, Vincent Koch headlines a group of South Africans looking for a new home – which SA team should sign the Springbok tighthead?
In financial disarray and on the verge of going into administration, Wasps look to be heading down the same path as relegated Worcester Warriors. A number of players will be released from their contracts, including the SA contingent of Koch, Nizaam Carr, Francois Hougaard and Francois Venter.
Koch is the only current Bok in the group and would be a big asset to any of South Africa’s four United Rugby Championship contenders.
The DHL Stormers scrum is loaded with Test heavies Steven Kitshoff and Frans Malherbe, and the addition of Koch would provide world-class insurance for the latter.
Thomas du Toit is the current Cell C Sharks captain and, while he’s enjoying life as a tighthead prop, the acquisition of Koch would allow Du Toit to shift back to loosehead where some believe he offers the most value.
The Lions have embraced their no-names tag to make an excellent start to the season. An exuberant backline and overachieving pack would applaud the injection of power and experience that signing Koch would provide.
And the Vodacom Bulls, who charged to last season’s final despite lacking veritable prop resources, would arguably be the team most improved by swooping for the Bok tighthead – an indomitable back row would be difficult to stop behind a solid scrum platform.
