In a long Test season, Jacques Nienaber’s team won the British & Irish Lions series 2-1, beat Argentina twice and defeated the All Blacks in the Australia-hosted Rugby Championship.
There have been plenty of outstanding performances throughout the season. Captain Siya Kolisi has led the Springboks excellently and hit career-best form after a difficult and injury-plagued 2020.
Eben Etzebeth has been a tower of strength for the Boks in the second row, starting 12 of the 13 Tests this year, including all three games against the Lions.
Damian de Allende and Lukhanyo Am surpassed iconic duo De Wet Barry and Marius Joubert as the second-most-capped Springbok centre pairing, by playing their 19th Test together against England.
Meanwhile, wing Makazole Mapimpi dotted down five times for the Springboks this year, with his fifth try in the match against England taking him to 20 Test tries in his international career.
The Springbok scrum has dominated throughout the year. Trevor Nyakane coped remarkably well with the herculean task of switching between his preferred tighthead- and loosehead-prop position. Bongi Mbonambi has brought a no-nonsense approach at hooker, starting in all but two of 13 Tests.
While he has mostly been utilised as a substitute, Steven Kitshoff has made a positive impact off the bench throughout the year when called on. Frans Steyn has also mostly been used off the bench in 2021, but has been an anchor of experience in this regard and performed very well during the UK tour.
