Paul Roos set Super Schools alight

Convincing wins for Paul Roos, Maritzburg, Affies and Waterkloof highlighted the final day of the Wildeklawer Super Schools festival in Kimberley.

Paul Roos continued to impress with a 30-10 thrashing of EG Jansen. Flyhalf Reinhardt Fortuin opened the scoring for the winners with an early penalty, but Jansies centre Delano Kotze levelled matters soon after. Fortuin then booted three more points, before slipping through for the first try of the match, which he also converted. Three further tries, by fullback Aiyden Cupido, wing Nico Leonard and scrumhalf Calvin Nell stretched the lead to 30-3, before they conceded a late five-pointer. Fortuin earned the Man of the Match award for his 15-point contribution.

HTS Middelburg came from behind to beat Boland Landbou 12-11, after the scores were level at 6-6 at the break. Landbou scrumhalf Jondre Williams and HTS fullback Barend Smit exchanged penalties before Landbou substitute Sergull van Niekerk raced clear for a brilliant individual try. But with two further penalties, it was the accurate boot of Smit which swung the match.

Glenwood suffered another defeat, 20-15 to Outeniqua. James Venter slid over to give Glenwood a 10-3 lead, but ill-discipline then took its toll when the referee awarded Outeniqua a penalty try and yellow-carded Glenwood fullback Morné Joubert. A man short, they retook the lead again when wing Philani Ngcobo got on the scoresheet. But two further touchdowns, by fullback Corné de Klerk and prop Andrew Kuhn, sealed the match for Outeniqua.

Maritzburg College handed hosts Diamantveld their second defeat at the tournament, winning 21-9. Maritzburg's points came courtesy of three converted scores, including a brace from flank Renard le Roux. Diamantveld failed to cross the line, with flyhalf Gerco Nortjie kicking the penalty goals.

After their humiliating 40-7 loss to Paarl Gym, Affies returned to winning ways, defeating Oakdale 21-10. In a clash of the heavyweights, Grey Bloem sneaked past Paarl Gym 15-14 in a thrilling encounter. Monument and Selborne played to a 23-23 draw and KES edged Noord-Kaap 13-12 in a scrappy affair. Drostdy lost 29-35 to the Saru Invitational XV. In a nine-try match, Waterkloof beat Grey PE 39-24, with Waterkloof flank Juandré Michau bagging a hat-trick.
