Former England skipper Will Carling has named his all-time Test lineup, which includes just one Springbok and five All Blacks.
Selecting his best of the best for Ruck.co.uk, Carling’s dream team includes seven World Cup winners and, surprisingly, only three Englishmen.
A centre with the devastating mix of speed, size and agility, but whose career was stunted by the Boks’ Test isolation, Danie Gerber will link up in midfield with former British & Irish Lions and Ireland captain Brian O’Driscoll.
Commenting on Gerber’s inclusion, Carling said: “I wouldn’t have liked to have played against him. With his pace, power and aggression, he was like a little rocket. He was built like a tank and had the pace of an F1 car.

“Although he wasn’t seen much on the international scene [because of the apartheid boycotts] he made a huge impact. With more time he would have had an incredible effect.”
Former England skipper Martin Johnson and All Blacks great Colin Meads combine in the second row, behind a powerful front row of Welshman Graham Price, Kiwi Sean Fitzpatrick and Englishman Jason Leonard.
Frenchman Serge Blanco lines up with Kiwi Jonah Lomu and Australian David Campese in a potent back three, Argentinian Hugo Porta and Welshman Gareth Edwards partner at halfback, while Englishman Richard Hill packs down in the loose trio with All Blacks Zinzan Brooke and Michael Jones.
Will Carling’s Dream XV – 15 Serge Blanco (France), 14 David Campese (Australia), 13 Brian O’Driscoll (Ireland), 12 Danie Gerber (South Africa), 11 Jonah Lomu (New Zealand), 10 Hugo Porta (Argentina), 9 Gareth Edwards (Wales), 8 Zinzan Brooke (New Zealand), 7 Michael Jones (New Zealand), 6 Richard Hill (England), 5 Colin Meads (New Zealand), 4 Martin Johnson (England), 3 Graham Price (Wales), 2 Sean Fitzpatrick (New Zealand), 1 Jason Leonard (England).
