Newly appointed director of rugby John Mitchell says Carlos Spencer will not be joining the Bulls' management team.

Mitchell has taken charge at the Bulls after a failed Super Rugby campaign that saw the franchise suffer 11 defeats in 15 matches.

There were reports that Mitchell could add former All Blacks flyhalf Carlos Spencer to his coaching staff, but the 53-year-old told Brendan Nel that would not be the case.

'Carlos is contracted in Japan and I think that rumour should be squashed,' said Mitchell. 'We've had a relationship before and he is a bloody good coach but at this moment in time we'll just stick with what we have.

'As I said before, my role is operational but ultimately it's my responsibility to mentor and develop coaches as well. We've got five strength and conditioning coaches here. From my point of view, the head strength and conditioning coach is somebody who has to be relevant and up to date with science and with the ability to collect data.'

Mitchell also confirmed that they are in the process of restructuring the Bulls coaching ranks, but that an official announcement will only be made later.

'We have a lot of personnel here, it's just a matter of identifying the competency levels and making sure people are relevant and up to date,' he said.
