Springbok hooker Bongi Mbonambi has revealed the reasons behind his high-profile move from the Stormers to the Sharks in 2021.

The World Cup-winning Bok started his professional career at the Vodacom Bulls in 2012 before joining the Stormers in 2015.

He spent the next six seasons at the Cape side, but last year signed a lucrative deal to join the Sharks and, according to the player, the decision was based on the belief that he could accomplish more in Durban than at the Stormers.

“Part of the move was [fuelled by] my desire to see my career go further,” Mbonambi tells Sport24.

“I saw that the best place to do that was here at the Sharks. I gravitated to them for how they’ve been playing rugby and performing.

“I came to the Sharks to keep challenging myself, to become a better rugby player. The older I get, the more challenges I want to look for and the better I want to play.

“The professional set-up they have here, having everything in one place [Kings Park] means you just come to do your work here and you don’t need to drive around [to different locations].

“They also have the kind of culture where I see myself growing. Even after my rugby career, I can see myself playing an important role here.

“But, most importantly, it was for my family and to be a provider for them and to make sure that I have the kind of base where I can do that properly.”
