Liebenberg: ‘No-brainer’ to stay with Leicester

Former Junior Springbok captain Hanro Liebenberg says committing his future to current Premiership log leaders Leicester Tigers was an easy decision to make.

Liebenberg was one of seven players to have signed new deals with Leicester, the club announced on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old loose forward had a good start life in the Premiership since joining the Tigers from the Vodacom Bulls in 2019 and was named as the club’s player of the season after his second year in England.

Now in his third season with Leicester, he has been appointed as the team’s vice-captain and led them in a Premiership match against Exeter Chiefs.

“It’s my third season now, obviously when I arrived here things were not as they used to be or as it is now,” Liebenberg told LeicestershireLive.

“So this past season, season and a half was just a no-brainer, I think the players we have, the coaching staff we have now, you’d have to be pretty stupid to leave the club now.”

Leicester have won 11 of their 13 games this season and are currently seven points ahead of second-placed Saracens.

“Winning is a big part of it, it plays a massive role,” Liebenberg added. “The coaching staff working together as a team just makes things so much easier. Winning off the back of that is a bonus, but the boys and the group now have something special. You always want to be part of this group that’s building something new, and you don’t want to miss out by leaving. Basically, it’s a no-brainer to stay.”
