Lambie: Chuffed to be part of something special

Sharks kicking consultant Patrick Lambie says the team has performed outstandingly and could kick on if given the chance to play again.

After retiring as a player in early 2019 on doctor’s advice due to the ongoing affects from multiple head knocks, Lambie was convinced to re-join the Sharks’ setup as a kicking consultant.

The 29-year-old is now mentoring a Sharks backline with promising talent in Aphelele Fassi, Curwin Bosch and Sanele Nohamba as well as experienced players in captain Lukhanyo Am and Springboks Andre Esterhuizen, Makazole Mapimpi and Sbu Nkosi.

Before the enforced break due to the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus, the Sharks were sitting on top of the South African conference and leading the overall standings seven rounds into the tournament.

Speaking to the Independent on Saturday, Lambie said that he would have loved to have been able to play in the current Sharks backline.

‘Credit has to be given to Sean and his coaching staff,’ Lambie said. ‘They obviously put a lot in place in the pre-season regarding team culture and game strategy, and that has given the players the confidence to play the thrilling rugby they have — and the fact they have done it consistently proves they are in a very positive environment.

‘It is a very encouraging atmosphere in which to be a rugby player — the players are happy and smiling, their feet are on the ground and they are enjoying each others’ company. I am really chuffed to be a part of something special when a few months back I had resolved to walk away from the game.

‘I would have loved to have played in this Sharks backline,’ he added. ‘It is a world class combination that is having fun while performing outstandingly… They are a joy to watch, and they have a forward pack punching above its weight because they know they have a responsibility to give their backs quality ball.

‘I can’t remember the Sharks ever topping the overall standings near the halfway mark of [Vodacom] Super Rugby… and the cool thing is I know they can keep going if they get the chance.’
