Stormers speedster Cheslin Kolbe will be sidelined for up to two months after picking up a knee injury in training.
Kolbe was training with the Stormers in Hermanus ahead of the 2014 Super Rugby competition.
‘He’s done a lateral meniscus. It’s torn, so he will be operated on soon,’ said Stormers coach Allister Coetzee. ‘Someone stood on his foot and the knee just buckled. So, it’s like a freak accident.’
The injury setback will see Kolbe miss the Stormers’ first four matches of the competition – against the Lions, Hurricanes, Crusaders and Chiefs.
The Stormers are already in need of more specialised wingers following the departure of Bryan Habana (Toulon) and Gerhard van den Heever (Munster), so Kolbe’s injury will raise even more concerns for Coetzee.
Centre Damian de Allende is likely to shift to the wing (a position he is also familiar with).
