Jones calls up two Saffas for England

Flank Michael Rhodes and prop Nick Schonert have been selected in England’s 36-man squad for the November Tests.

Rhodes and Schonert are two of eight uncapped players who are included in a depleted England group that is missing 11 first-choice players due to injury.

The other newcomers are Joe Cokanasiga, Nathan Earle, Ted Hill, Zach Mercer, Ben Moon and Elliott Stooke.

There were also recalls for Ben Morgan, who returns to the Test set-up for the first time since 2015, and Chris Ashton, who last played for England in 2014.

Jones also announced flyhalf Owen Farrell and hooker Dylan Hartley as co-captains of the side.

The absence of Danny Cipriani, Don Armand and Christian Wade are the notable omissions.

‘I’m really happy with the squad. We can only control what we can control and injuries have happened. It gives an opportunity for some good new players to play some important Tests for England, while players who have been in the squad before will have to take on more responsibility,’ Jones said.

‘The Portugal camp is about getting the team organised. The players have all been playing in different systems and with different ideas at their clubs so it’s about producing a team that is absolutely brutal in the physical contest, as the game demands, and also playing a smart English brand of rugby.

‘We love Twickenham. The players feel the support and we can’t wait to get out there and play in front of 82,000 against South Africa.’

England take on the Springboks on 3 November, followed by Tests against the All Blacks, Japan and the Wallabies on 10, 17 and 24 November.

England squad:

Forwards – Tom Curry, Charlie Ewels, Jamie George, Dylan Hartley (cc), Alec Hepburn, Ted Hill, Maro Itoje, George Kruis, Courtney Lawes, Zach Mercer, Ben Moon, Ben Morgan, Michael Rhodes, Nick Schonert, Brad Shields, Kyle Sinckler, Elliott Stooke, Sam Underhill, Harry Williams, Mark Wilson.

Backs – Chris Ashton, Mike Brown, Danny Care, Joe Cokanasiga, Elliot Daly, Nathan Earle, Owen Farrell (cc), George Ford, Alex Lozowski, Jonny May, Jack Nowell, Henry Slade, Ben Te’o, Manu Tuilagi, Richard Wigglesworth, Ben Youngs.
