Italy flank grateful for Genge’s life-saving intervention

Italy flank Sebastian Negri has thanked Ellis Genge for coming to his aid during the Six Nations match between Italy and England in Rome on Sunday.

Negri had only been on the pitch for 16 minutes of the second half when he was knocked unconscious after a collision with England forward Nick Isiekwe.

But while most of the English players celebrated Isiekwe’s dominance in the collision, Genge was alert enough to recognise that Negri was choking and the prop immediately leapt into action.

Genge rushed to Negri and rolled him over and immediately called for medical attention. After receiving medical attention, Negri was driven from the field on the medical cart.

“I heard him choking so I gave him a slap to see if he reacted,” Genge said. “He just carried on choking so I didn’t know if he had swallowed his tongue – that’s why I tried to roll him on to his side.

“I’m not a master in medicine but I’m pretty sure you are supposed to put them in the recovery position, so I tried to do that. I was quickly ushered away by the medics so I let them just carry on.”
