Sharks lock Gerbrandt Grobler has reportedly saved a pregnant woman trapped in her home during the heavy flooding in KwaZulu-Natal this week.

Sharks chief executive Eduard Coetzee told Netwerk24 that Grobler (30) helped the woman to safety in the middle of the night in Umdloti.

The devastating floods have wreaked havoc in and around Durban, leading to the death of at least 306 people, with roads and hillsides washed away while several homes have been destroyed.

Coetzee says Sharks team manager Trevor Barnes’ son-in-law died after he fell from his rooftop in Pietermaritzburg, while flank James Venter’s home was flooded. Kings Park Stadium and fields were also heavily under water.

“Almost everyone has been affected. On Tuesday, I didn’t have water or electricity at my house but that’s the least of anyone’s problems,” Coetzee said.

“A lot of our security and cleaning staff have lost family members. It’s been rough and chaotic.”

But, in the midst of all the tragedy, Coetzee was proud of how the likes of Grobler had stepped up. Cameron Wright, Jeremy Ward and Boeta Chamberlain also helped carry mud away in wheelbarrows from a local coffee shop.

“These guys have just been amazing,” Coetzee added.

Saturday’s Currie Cup match between the Sharks and Vodacom Bulls was called off due to the flooding. The result was declared a draw and the log points shared between the teams.
