Oregan Hoskins has stepped down as president of SA Rugby.

Hoskins announced his resignation at a general council meeting with provincial rugby bosses in Johannesburg on Wednesday, before walking out. His deputy, Mark Alexander, will take over as acting president.

Hoskins said the reason for his decision was because members of SA Rugby's executive council, himself included, had 'drifted too far apart'. 

'I have enjoyed a remarkable ten and a half years in one of the most high-profile roles in South African sport and have enjoyed some incredible highs. It has been a pleasure and a privilege and I want to thank everyone involved in South African rugby for the fantastic journey we shared,' said Hoskins.

'However, over recent months we have faced tough challenges and had some tough conversations which made me think about my role and my future. With my term due to end in 18 months’ time I decided it was time to start the next phase of my career, although I have no firm plans as yet.'

'After ten years in the hot seat it’s time for me to hand over to a new person to carry this heavy burden, but wonderful privilege.'
