Hogg ‘upset’ by ‘unsubstantiated’ Le Roux bite claims

Scotland and British & Irish Lions fullback Stuart Hogg has released a statement denying claims that he bit Springbok fullback Willie le Roux during the second Test match on Saturday.

During one of the many scuffles that broke out during a fractious second Test of the series, Hogg appeared to have his mouth around Le Roux’s bicep.

The incident occured in the first half, after Springbok wing Cheslin Kolbe took Lions scrumhalf Conor Murray out in the air when chasing a kick.

When Lions flanker Tom Curry took exception to the tackle, players from both sides flew in. Video replays showed Hogg latching onto Le Roux during the scuffle, placing his mouth on the Bok fullback’s arm and then shoulder before Le Roux managed to free himself.

However, in a statement released by the Lions on Sunday after the Test match, Hogg categorically denied accusations that he bit Le Roux.

“Following speculation that has surfaced online, I would like to categorically deny any foul play in last night’s game,” Hogg said.

“I would never bite an opponent and I am annoyed and upset by this unsubstantiated accusation. I’ve always been proud of playing rugby in the spirit of the game.

“Respect to the Springboks for their deserved win. The squad is hurting after last night’s defeat, but it’s all to play for next week. It’s going to be a cup final and everyone’s going to be up for it.”

No citings have been issued up to this point.
