Grey College ran in five tries to beat Waterkloof 29-3 at the Wildeklawer Super Schools festival on Saturday.
The main fixture of the day failed to live up to expectations, turning into a one-sided affair.
Waterkloof made the better start, but Grey’s committed defence absorbed the early pressure. Flyhalf Willie Ludik eventually gave Klofies the lead with a long-range penalty, but that’s as good as it got for them.
A brace by fullback Dian Gouws and a converted try from wing Marnus Boshoff saw Grey take a 17-3 advantage into the break.
Any chance of a Waterkloof revival in the second half was ended when Grey replacements Raynard Esterhuizen (No 8) and Jandré de Beer (flyhalf) scored their side's fourth and fifth tries.
‘This result was built on strong, solid defence. We weren’t very good today,’ Grey coach Wessel du Plessis told SARugbymag.co.za. ‘We made too many handling errors and our attack wasn’t as fluent as I know it can be. Credit must go to Waterkloof for pushing us to our limit, but I’m pretty stoked with that scoreline against a team of their quality.'
