Johan Goosen accidentally shot his friend in the ankle on the Springbok utility back's farm near Aliwal North in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday.
Goosen recently retired from the game and accepted a corporate position with a Bloemfontein-based company, allegedly in a bid to get out of his contract with French club Racing 92 worth €500,000 (R7.1-million) per season.
The 24-year-old had reportedly planned to return to the game with the Cheetahs in Super Rugby, before joining English club Gloucester, but the Cheetahs distanced themselves from the player after Racing 92 said they would take legal action against him.
Now Goosen is once again making headlines for the wrong reasons.
According to Netwerk24, Goosen accidently shot his friend Armandt Stoman (24), who was taken to a Bloemfontein hospital where he had an operation.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Marinda Mills said more information would be released after police had taken statements from both Goosen and Stoman.
