Glasgow wary of getting sucked into Stormers’ style

Defence coach Peter Murchie says Glasgow Warriors want to impose their style of play on the Stormers in Friday’s clash at Cape Town Stadium, reports DEVIN HERMANUS.

The Scottish side face the Capetonians in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship in the first of two matches in South Africa for Danny Wilson’s men, and will clash with the Vodacom Bulls next week.

Glasgow arrive in SA on the back of a 27-17 victory over Newcastle Falcons in the Challenge Cup, booking a quarter-final spot. But, according to Murchie, the Stormers’ run of five successive wins at home and their exciting brand of rugby is not to be taken lightly.

Ahead of the trip to South Africa, the defence guru said: “All the SA teams are picking up results [but] the business end of the season and away games are a good test. We’ve wanted to improve our away form and [last] Friday was an opportunity to put a marker down, and going to SA is a similar challenge.

“The Stormers play a fairly unique style, and the stats are obvious – from transition, they’re scoring a lot of tries and their backline is dangerous, as are the back-row guys.

“We want to implement our own game against the Stormers. We have to play our way, and that’s our best chance to beat these guys.”

Familiar faces among the Scottish visitors will be ex-Griquas flyer Kyle Steyn and Cape-born Oli Kebble, who has previously played Super Rugby with the Stormers, and in the Currie Cup with Western Province.

Murchie added: “Oli has come up through the Stormers system, so we’ve got some insight, which is useful to tap into the psyche and what we can expect out there … the mindset. It all ties into what we’ve seen from them, and we’ve done our homework – confrontational forwards, lightning backs.”
