Coach Danny Wilson says Glasgow Warriors are determined to become the first European side to win back-to-back Vodacom United Rugby Championship matches in South Africa, reports DEVIN HERMANUS.
The third-placed Scottish outfit face the Stormers, in fifth, at Cape Town Stadium on Friday, before taking on the Vodacom Bulls in Pretoria next week.
The South African teams have won 15 of 16 URC games in the Republic against overseas opponents, overpowering and outscoring the visitors in most of the encounters.
Edinburgh punished a sloppy Sharks performance in a wet and rainy Durban, but ended their tour with a tough defeat by the Lions.
Briefing media on Glasgow’s chances of succeeding where Edinburgh failed, Wilson said: “It poured with rain and changed the conditions. The weather in Cape Town has been very hot and it’s a fast track down here.
“We’re playing the two form sides, and we’re fully aware of the danger and strike force that awaits us.
“[Stormers] is a team that starts fast; they get out the blocks and go well, so we need to do the same. We’re coming off good form and we’re certainly here to win two games of rugby; we know how hard the challenge is, but if we do it, we’ll be the first.
“We’re all moving into a block when all the sides have their internationals back and are fully loaded, and we’ll see that more as we move into the latter stages, and the playoffs.”
Much has also been made in the buildup to Friday’s clash in Cape Town of Oli Kebble and his ‘homecoming’ – the SA-born Glasgow prop was part of the front-row ranks at the Stormers from 2012 to 2017.
But, Wilson says Kebble’s face-off against his ex-teammates and World Cup-winning Springboks Steven Kitshoff and Frans Malherbe is one of many battles that will decide the outcome.
“Oli is excited and motivated to come back and face his home team, and his family is also here to support him,” the Glasgow boss said.
“He is keen to prove himself against this opposition, he made that clear to me in the buildup, and he has the local knowledge.
“Scrum time is going to be a challenge; they’ve got a very good pack of forwards. But we’ve got very experienced props in Oli and Zander Fagerson, and Jamie Bhatti, and supported by [hookers] Johnny Matthews and George Turner. That challenge is part of a number of big challenges.”
