Centre Andre Esterhuizen produced an industrious performance to guide Harlequins to a thrilling three-point win over Gloucester.
Playing in his 100th game for Gloucester, Ruan Ackermann capped the milestone with a fine display. Powering through the Quins defence, he scored the first try of the match to extend his team’s advantage to 10 points.
Harlequins fought back well to level the scores at 10-10 heading into the break.
The visitors doubled their tally in the second half, with Esterhuizen front and centre of their comeback.
The South African ran a game-high 80 metres from 15 carries (also a game high) to go with his eight passes and seven tackles.
Tyrone Green also performed admirably for Quins, but ultimately it was Esterhuizen who was awarded the man-of-the-match honours for his telling contribution in Quins’ 20-17 victory.
Elsewhere this past Sunday, the Newcastle Falcons – featuring former Sharks trio Louis Schreuder, Philip van der Walt and Kyle Cooper – slumped to a 31-0 defeat by the Leicester Tigers, who had lock Eli Snyman in their starting lineup.
Saracens romped to a 30-6 win over the Northampton Saints at Franklin’s Gardens.
Scrumhalves Ivan van Zyl and Ruben de Haas turned out for Sarries, while Saints had wing Courtnall Skosan, No 8 Juarno Augustus and lock David Ribbans in their ranks.
