Esterhuizen set for round two against Farrell

Andre Esterhuizen will face Owen Farrell for the first time since the two clashed in a controversial tackle during a Test match between the Springboks and England in 2018.

Springbok and Harlequins centre Esterhuizen and England and Saracens captain Farrell have been named to start in the English Premiership semi-final on Saturday.

It will be the first time that Esterhuizen gets a chance to run at Farrell since he was on the end of what appeared to be a no-arms tackle from the Englishman in the final play of a 2018 Test match at Twickenham.

The referee for that match, Angus Gardner, reviewed Farrell’s tackle with the TMO and controversially decided that it was not dangerous, despite it appearing to have been made with no arms and hitting Esterhuizen around the head and neck area. England would claim a 12-11 win over the Springboks.

“It’s actually the first time we have played against each other again since that game,” Esterhuizen told the media in England this week. “It’s a normal question, I actually run at every ten every weekend so if he is playing ten I am probably going to run at him. We’ll see what happens.”
