Eben Etzebeth says it’s a no-brainer for the Springboks to consider splitting from the Rugby Championship to join the Six Nations.

Speculation has been rife over the past few months that the Boks could ditch the Sanzaar partnership to link up with Europe’s elite.

Despite committing to Sanzaar and the Rugby Championship until at least the end of 2024, suggestions are that the door is still open for South Africa to join the Six Nations in 2025.

The Boks have been involved in the southern-hemisphere tournament since it was first formed as the Tri-Nations in 1996, claiming their first title in 1998. Their rivalry with the All Blacks is a highlight of the Test calendar, as the two teams have a history going back to 1921.

Speaking to Jim Hamilton in a video interview with RugbyPass, Etzebeth was quizzed about a potential move away from the Rugby Championship.

“I think the Six Nations would be good for us,” the 97-cap Bok World Cup winner said. “Obviously, it just makes sense with us playing in the URC at the moment against the same competition.

“Maybe we could have a full June series against New Zealand, play in the Six Nations and then have an end-of-year tour in Australia or Argentina. I would love to join the Six Nations, but I would also love to still play those other teams as well. Maybe they [World Rugby] can get a good balance.

“At the end of the day, for me it’s just about playing for South Africa.”
