Dale College has been rocked by the death of a player from a head injury suffered during a game, and this follows news of another who went missing and was later found dead.
First XV lock Liyabona Teyise (18) died on Saturday from complications due to bleeding on the brain. He had been injured in a 16-8 win over Port Rex Technical High School in East London.
Teyise’s death came after 17-year-old Lisakhanya Lwana, also a first-team player who played flyhalf, was found dead on Tuesday after he was last seen the past Saturday.
Speaking to Sport24, Dale College headmaster Garth Shaw says the possibility of the team now travelling to Johannesburg for the King Edward VII School Easter Festival was unlikely.
“At this point in time, probably not, and we will make a final decision on Monday,” Shaw said. “We appreciate hugely that the KES tournament organisers have been very understanding and supportive.
“At this point in time, we need to do what is best for our players and coaches.”
