Springbok centre Juan de Jongh will miss the Tests against Wales and Scotland with a severe chest infection.
De Jongh spent four nights in hospital earlier this week and has been treated for pneumonia. Doctors have advised him against participating in any vigorous physical activity for the next three to four weeks.
His absence is yet another blow to coach Heyneke Meyer's preparations as centre stocks in South Africa continue to dwindle.
Meyer cursed the situation in which he now finds himself.
'Juan is the fifth centre we’ve lost in the last month and his versatility in the midfield will be missed,' said Meyer.
'I’ve spoken to Juan and we wanted to give him a run during this series, as he’s been in great form for the Stormers. At this stage he needs to focus on getting better and returning to the playing field, and I’m sure he will bounce back strongly.'
No decision has been made yet on whether any replacements will be called up.
