On 30 May 2009, Victor Matfield scored an acrobatic try as the Vodacom Bulls demolished the Chiefs in a high-scoring Super 14 final in Pretoria.
Matfield’s swan-like dive across the whitewash, after fellow skipper Mils Muliaina rounded off a length-of-field effort for the New Zealanders at Loftus Versfeld, showed SA rugby to be in prime health with a performance of power, pace and panache.
The Bulls steamrolled the first-time finalists, with Springbok star Fourie du Preez turning in a masterclass and scoring the hosts’ two opening tries.
Bryan Habana also notched two first-half scores before Wynand Olivier, Pierre Spies, Danie Rossouw and Matfield heaped misery on the visitors, a 61-17 victory in front of a passionate home crowd securing a second Super 14 title in three seasons for the men in blue.
