On 24 July, 2004, a last-gasp Doug Howlett try for the All Blacks snatched victory from the Springboks in a heart-stopping Tri-Nations clash in Christchurch.

The match got off to a flying start as Jean de Villiers touched down for the Boks after just 23 seconds at Jade Stadium.

However, the All Blacks had the Springboks on the ropes thereafter, dominating territory and possession, and Dan Carter’s boot kicked the hosts into a 9-7 lead.

The game swung back the Boks’ way when Jacques Cronje crashed over in the corner, before Carter decreased the deficit by two points before the break, but a stunning try by Fourie du Preez gave the Boks a 21-12 cushion from which Jake White’s men should’ve gone on to win the match.

The Bok defence neutralised the All Blacks’ dangerous outside backs, but New Zealand slowly chipped away at the visitors’ lead after half time via the boot of Carter and Carlos Spencer.

Then, in the final minute, the dam wall finally burst as the All Blacks wore the South Africans down through countless phases before Howlett’s try in the right-hand corner sealed a 23-21 win for the men in black.
