Deon Davids Davids in the firing line?
Published on May 14, 2019 | Leave a response

Rumours doing the rounds suggest that Kings coach Deon Davids will be removed from his post this week.

Davids’ contract with the Kings comes to an end only on 2 June 2020, but according to various reports, the consortium who holds a controlling stake in the franchise has set plans in motion to remove the 51-year-old with immediate effect.

Along with Davids’ looming departure, the owners are also set to release at least 20 players before the start of the new Pro14 season in September.

It’s said that a potential replacement for Davids could be Sharks assistant coach Sean Everitt or Junior Springboks coach Chean Roux.

Meyer wants to lure ‘forgotten’ Combrinck to France

Lions and Springbok utility back Ruan Combrinck is reportedly exploring the possibility of joining the Stade Français ahead of the 2019-20 European season.

Combrinck has had a horrid time of late as he is struggling for regular game time at the Lions, while there also seems to be no way back into the Springbok set-up for him.

According to a report, Stade coach Heyneke Meyer has now offered Combrinck a lifeline to come play in France, and it is believed that negotiations between the parties are already unde rway.

The Lions are reportedly keen to keep Combrinck in Johannesburg and will table a counter-offer to the 29-year-old’s representatives.

Meanwhile, the union are also trying to secure the services of wing Courtnall Skosan and prop Dylan Smith, who both received lucrative offers to play abroad.

Waratahs boss slams Seconds

Daryl Gibson has lamented the high penalty count against his side in their agonising 29-28 defeat against the Lions on Saturday.

According to the official Super Rugby website, the Waratahs conceded 11 penalties, compared to the Lions’ two throughout the game. After the match, former Bok coach Nick Mallett implied that the South African referee favoured the Lions, and now Gibson has also questioned Seconds’ performance.

‘Several of the decisions towards the end of the match did not go our way,’ Gibson told Netwerk24.

‘With that penalty count against us we just couldn’t get any momentum. I really think the penalty count against us was tough. That penalty we conceded that they kicked over to go 29-28 left me puzzled.’
