Shadward Fillies grabbed two tries in three minutes to inspire SWD to a 38-23 victory over Western Province in the final game on day three of the Craven Week, writes BRENTON CHELIN in Middelburg.
In a tight encounter, SWD found themselves with a narrow 19-16 lead midway through the second half following a Mervano Da Silva try for Western Province. The Cape side were unable to secure possession from the ensuing kick-off and Eagles eighthman Nevada Jacobs latched onto the ball before offloading for Fillies to go over for his first try.
He would follow this up minutes later with another bit of quick thinking. With Province on the attack just inside SWD territory, Fillies gambled by coming off his line. He showed great athleticism to pluck the ball out of the air and race clear to score a vital interception try. An opportunistic winger with fine finishing skills, Fillies performance made him the Coca-Cola Hero of the Day.
The victory puts SWD in a great position to play in Saturday's main match where all eyes will be on the Sao Bras Secondary School student to see if he can repeat his heroics.
