Quade Cooper has been released from his Toulon contract to play for the Australian Sevens team in the lead-up to the Olympics Games in Rio.
This comes after the Australian Rugby Union and the French club brokered a deal that will allow the 27-year-old to feature in three Sevens Series tournaments and at the Olympics.
Cooper will likely get his first opportunity at his home tournament in Sydney on the weekend of 6-7 February, and will also be free to participate at the Paris and London Sevens in May.
'I’ve had this chance in the back of my mind for a long time. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime now that I get to prepare for the Sydney Sevens next week,' Cooper said.
The 58-cap Wallabies flyhalf conceded he knows it'll be tough to adjust to sevens rugby.
'I’m under no illusions about how tough this is going to be and the specialist sevens skills I need to learn beside players who have been playing for years. I can’t really say if I’ll be good or not, but I’m not doing this to make up the numbers. I want to excel,' he added.
