With the Springboks and Wallabies set to clash next week in the Rugby Championship, here’s a look back to 2009 when Bryan Habana helped the Boks win a 57-point thriller in Perth.
On the hunt for a first Tri-Nations title since 2004, the Springboks went into their rematch with Australia having beaten the Wallabies at Newlands after claiming back-to-back wins at home over the All Blacks.
Robbie Deans’ Wallabies, meanwhile, were winless in the tournament and coming off a narrow one-point loss to the All Blacks in Sydney.
The Springboks got off to a flying start as Fourie du Preez scored as early as the fifth minute from a quick-tap penalty, before Jaque Fourie went over for a try four minutes later. Bryan Habana then latched on to a loose ball to score to the first of his two tries and put the Boks 22-3 ahead.
The Wallabies fired back in the second half as flyhalf Matt Giteau, who scored 18 points in the match, dotted down twice in between Habana’s second try. While Lachie Turner danced his way through the Bok defence late on, it would not be enough as South Africa claimed a 32-25 victory.
