The Cheetahs could take legal action against SA Rugby to prevent the franchise from being cut from Super Rugby.
Sanzaar announced a week ago that two South African teams, expected to be the Cheetahs and Kings, and an Australian team, either the Force or Rebels, would be dropped from the tournament ahead of the 2018 season.
The Force have already taken legal action against the Australian Rugby Union, and the Cheetahs may do the same in South Africa.
According to Rapport newspaper, the Cheetahs have already consulted with a senior counsel to test the validity of their participation contract with SA Rugby that stipulates they are part of Super Rugby until the current broadcast deal expires in 2020.
'The Free State Cheetahs (Pty) Ltd will at all times act in the interest and protection of Cheetahs rugby,' the franchise told Rapport. 'We will consider all possible ways available to us.'
