Organisers of the European Champions Cup are set to hold talks on the competition’s future and a potential downsizing with player welfare in mind.
According to the Guardian, the tournament’s TV and sponsorship deals are set to expire in 2022, and organisers are seeking assurances from stakeholders that they will be committed beyond 2020, as they will then have the right to give two year’s notice should they wish to withdraw from the competition.
While there is little chance of the tournament ending, concerns have been raised about the congested fixture list and how this is impacting player welfare in Europe.
The report goes on to state that a potential solution would be to reduce the number of competing teams from 20 to 16, which would see each team play four pool matches before two-leg semi-finals.
