Carty at 10 for Ireland

Jack Carty Carty at 10 for Ireland
Published on August 29, 2019

Jack Carty will make his first Test start for an Ireland team featuring wholesale changes for their World Cup warm-up against Wales in Cardiff on Saturday.

Carty has won all five of his Test caps off the bench since making his debut this year, but has been handed an opportunity to impress Ireland coach Joe Schmidt.

Ross Byrne, who started in the 57-15 loss to England, has dropped out of the matchday squad, while Johnny Sexton and Joey Carbury are still out with minor injuries.

There are, on the whole, 11 changes from the team that slumped to a record loss at Twickenham, as Schmidt looks to give outsiders a run before naming his 31-man World Cup squad on Monday.

Carty is paired by Connacht teammate Kieran Marmion as the halfback combination, while Bundee Aki, one of the remaining players from the loss, is joined in midfield by Chris Farrell.

Will Addison is at fullback, while Andrew Conway is on the right wing as Jacob Stockdale retains his place on the left wing.

Matchday captain Peter O’Mahony and Iain Henderson are the remaining forwards from the loss against England. O’Mahony is joined in the loose-trio by No 8 Jack Conan and flank Tadhg Beirne.

James Ryan forms the lock pair with Henderson, while there is an all-new front row featuring tighthead John Ryan, hooker Niall Scannell and loosehead Dave Kilcoyne.

Ireland – 15 Will Addison, 14 Andrew Conway, 13 Chris Farrell, 12 Bundee Aki, 11 Jacob Stockdale, 10 Jack Carty, 9 Kieran Marmion, 8 Jack Conan, 7 Peter O’Mahony, 6 Tadhg Beirne, 5 James Ryan, 4 Iain Henderson, 3 John Ryan, 2 Niall Scannell, 1 Dave Kilcoyne.
Subs: 16 Rory Best, 17 Andrew Porter, 18 Tadhg Furlong, 19 Devin Toner, 20 Jordi Murphy, 21 Luke McGrath, 22 Garry Ringrose, 23 Dave Kearney.
