Dan Carter will miss at least two of the All Blacks' Rugby Championship matches.
A scan has confirmed that the flyhalf suffered a small crack in his upper fibula bone during last Saturday's Super Rugby final.
Carter will therefore miss the All Blacks' two matches against the Wallabies in Sydney on 16 August and in Auckland a week later.
The 32-year-old could also be in doubt for the Tests against the Pumas in Napier and the Springboks in Wellington on September 6 and 13.
